Born in England, Michael brings with him extensive hotel industry experience having lived and worked on four continents during his 30 year career.
After a distinguished and notable profession in the UK, Michael first emigrated to Cape Town in 1995 where he took up the position of Deputy General Manager of the 370 room Cape Sun Hotel. Then in 1998 became General Manager of the iconic Mount Nelson Hotel, working for Orient Express Hotels.
Staying with Orient Express, Michael moved to the USA in 2001 where he assumed the position of Managing Director of the luxurious Keswick Hall Resort. Following a successful repositioning of the acclaimed Hotel, Golf Club and Luxury Residential Estate, Michael was offered the highly prized role of Chief Executive of Sandy Lane Resort, Barbados in 2005, overseeing many property initiatives and the hosting of the World Cup Golf Championships.
South Africa was ultimately calling the Pownall family back and in late 2008, Michael returned and accepted the Managing Director of the Southern Africa role for Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces, initially assuming the position of General Manager to build, launch and operate the luxury 176 room Taj Hotel Cape Town.
Married to Caroline with three great kids, a Labrador and a high Golf Handicap.
